The 7th Annual Meeting on High Performance Computing and Infrastructure in NorwayNOTUR2008 - ABSTRACTSDEISA - Towards a European HPC InfrastructureJohannes ReetzDEISA, the Distributed European Infrastructure for Supercomputing Applications, is a consortium of leading national supercomputing centres that aims at fostering the pan-European computational science research. Starting in 2004 it deploys and operates a production quality, distributed supercomputing environment with continental scope. The established infrastructure is based on a tight coupling of the national supercomputing centres using dedicated high-speed network interconnections across the continent. DEISA is offering unified services that enable the users to access the HPC facilities, manage their data, and to submit jobs across DEISA in a consistent manner. Quite recently, the DEISA consortium was awarded a further three-year contract within the EU Framework Programme 7. The follow-up project aims at delivering a turnkey operational solution for a future European HPC ecosystem comprising a variety of Tera- and Peta-scale computer systems. In this context, DEISA collaborates also with the consortium of PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe). The followed strategy is two-fold: to continue to support and develop its HPC infrastructure by consolidating and enhancing the existing unified services. And secondly, the consortium is extending the service provisioning model towards the inclusion of non-localized Virtual Science Communities and new associate partners. Starting with the presentation of the vision and strategy of DEISA, the talk will consider the setup and current status of the project, its achievements and impact in research.
