2010-02-03:

Åpent seminar om framtidige behov for eInfrastruktur for norsk forskning

See below for an English version of this item

Sted: Forskningsrådet, Stensberggata 26, Oslo
Dato: 19. mars 2010
Tid: 9:00 - 16:00

eInfrastruktur

Påmelding til sigma@uninett.no innen 5. mars. Vennligst oppgi navn, arbeidsgiver og spesielle behov angående lunsj (matallergier).

Møtet er gratis og åpent for alle. Deltakerne dekker selv eventuelle hotell- og reiseutgifter.

Open seminar on future needs for eInfrastructure for Norwegian research

Place: Forskningsrådet, Stensberggata 26, Oslo
Date: March 19, 2010
Time: 9:00 - 16:00

eInfrastructure

An increasing number of challenges in research become compute- and data-intensive. Many researchers have a need to develop models that require the use of increasingly larger computing resources or they experience an explosion in the amount of research data. This can be observed in various areas in the natural sciences (bio-informatics, physics and climate research), but also increasingly in the human and social sciences (e.g., linguistics).

Modern research requires eInfrastructure that enables cross-disciplinary research where parties share data and analyse large amounts of data. eInfrastructure consists of large computing resources, storage systems, advanced software systems, high performance digital communication and relevant support services. A Norwegian focus on eInfrastructure is important both for support of national objectives and for participation in European and global arenas. eInfrastructure is therefore an important element in the Research Councils focus on research infrastructure.

The Research Council of Norway has appointed an eInfrastructure Scientific Opportunities Panel that aims to identify the needs for eInfrastructure for Norwegian research from 2015 and onwards. In the first half of 2010, the eInfrastructure Scientific Opportunities Panel will compile a Scientific Case for national eInfrastructure. The objective is to identify the research environments - and their scientific challenges - that are or will be dependent on a well-functioning eInfrastructure in the future.

Open seminar

The Research Council of Norway arranges an open seminar on March 19 that is an opportunity for researchers from many disciplines to provide input to the eInfrastructure Scientific Opportunities Panel on future needs for eInfrastructure for Norwegian research and their work on the Scientific Case.

The meeting targets researchers from various areas in the natural sciences and the human and social sciences, as well as the administration from the Research Council of Norway.

More information about the meeting (incl. agenda) will be announced on this page. See below.

Registration

Register by sending email to sigma@uninett.no before March 5. Please provide name, employer, and any dietary requirements (food allergy).

The meeting is free of charge and open to everyone. Hotel and travel expenses are covered by the participants.
